A LIST OF 5 USEFUL IRISH SAYINGS FOR TODAY AND BEYOND
1."Put the heart crossways" in someone
To give someone a fright - This is what you'll do when you're staying with an Irish friend or relative and you accidentally walk in on them in the shower.
In use: "You put the heart crossway in me. I didn't see you there at all!"
Scare them first with our skull pendant:
2. "Like hen's teeth"
A shortened version from the original phrase "as rare as hen's teeth" Meaning that something is very rare. Have you ever seen teeth in a hen? Me neither.
In use: "Ah sure we used to have lots of eligible bachelors rounds these parts, but they're like hen's teeth now." Also rare are Flying Pigs:
3. "Naggins" and "shoulders"
Naggins and shoulders refer to the sizes of bottles of spirits. A shoulder will get you a good way to being happy out, but a naggin is perfect for smuggling (or "gooching") into a pub.
(However, we're not endorsing sneaking anything into any place.)
In use: "Get me a shoulder of Captain Morgan and Tim wants a naggin of vodka."
We’ll take the Captain Morgan, and The Buccaneer Necklace:
4. “A Friend’s Eye is a Good Mirror”
Birds of a feather flock together. Choose your friends wisely, you become like the people you associate with.
In use: I needed only to look into his friends eyes to know who I was dealing with.
If you have been blessed with a perfect friend, give them the perfect gift our Friendship necklace:
5. “If you want praise, die. If you want blame, marry.
Dying is easy; it’s living that’s hard. Only the good die young, they were good because they hadn’t lived long enough to make many mistakes.
In Use: I was perfect until we got married; now I get blamed for anything that goes wrong.
Together forever, til death do us part:
